Wireless in Farmers Branch
The City of Farmers Branch now offers free wireless Internet access for properly equipped laptops, PDAs, and other devices. Access is available at the Manske Library, Community Recreation Center and Senior Center. Advantages of such access include:
  • No waiting for a free PC and no standing in line!
  • No time limits - connect as long as you like!
  • Fast access!
  • No cables!
What you need:
  • A laptop, pocket PC or handheld device with 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability. Your existing device may already have this capability built-in. If not, you can purchase a wireless networking card for most laptops and many handhelds at any major electronics retailer.
  • Web Browser - You can use any standard Internet-ready browser on any operating system.
No additional software is required. The City encourages you to have virus-scanning software on your computer. In addition, you can protect yourself by keeping your computer up-to-date with critical operating system patches.
  • Network name (SSID) - Pick up a flyer at the Manske Library, Community Recreation Center, or Senior Center for SSID information.
  • DHCP and Wireless Mode - Your computer should be setup for dynamic DHCP by selecting “Obtain an IP address automatically” in TCP/IP properties. The wireless mode should be set to “Infrastructure.”

Coverage will vary throughout each building. Most wireless software has an indicator that tells you a signal is being received. Make sure the link quality and signal strength are both at least "good." If not, move about the room to a location that allows a stronger signal.
