On October 19,2000 with the help of diligent
colleagues at Dallas County, we found and (literally) blew the
dust off files containing travel time studies the County conducted
in 1991. Some of those studies covered Farmers Branch streets.
City Traffic staff has replicated some of the studies to allow for
a comparison of travel times from 1991 to 2000.
The studies were accomplished using the
“Floating Car” method. This type of study means driving at the
prevailing traffic speed and timing between points along the
route. Studies were performed in morning and evening peak periods
and from 12-2 p.m. The Routes studied in 1991 included Webb Chapel
Road, Midway Road, Spring Valley Road, Alpha Road and Dallas
Parkway. Results were reported in seconds, therefore an increase
in travel time would be bad news for motorists while a decrease
would be good news.
The results of the comparisons so far are
summarized below. We hope you find the information as interesting
as we do. For a context against which to judge the results,
traffic on Farmers Branch thoroughfares increased by an average of
over 30% from 1990 to 2000.
